There are several causes of hyper lactation (milk production excess), among others:
- If hyper lactation experienced in the first week of lactation, lactation is so hyper, actually reflects the enthusiasm of the mother's body to produce as much milk as possible. When the mother and baby have discovered how to balance it, then this problem will go away by itself (within approximately 6 to 10 weeks).
- When hyper lactation continues to be experienced by the mother, it may be because the women in question has many alveoli (milk producing glands) in the breast. Keep in mind, the average number of alveoli is 100,000 to 300,000 per breast. Mothers with hyper lactation often reach the upper limit of the average amount.
- Hyper lactation problems also can be caused by hormonal imbalance or a tumor on the pituitary gland (gland located below the brain and produces many hormones).
